June 23rd, 2007, among nearly 100 participants to in the Footsteps to Freedom Walk, commemorating World Refugee Day and raising money for Lutheran Community Services Northwest's many programs serving refugees and immigrants from over 25 countries. This event includes a 5K walk through the Laurelhurst and Sunnyside neighborhoods, a resource fair with information from local agencies and groups, music, food and speakers.
LCSN has done many great things for the refugee and immigrant population. There noble work is to be commended. In fact, my family were sponsored to this country by the Faith Lutheran churches in Albany Oregon. It would be extremely difficult to settle in a totally new country, with a totally different culture and tradition, as a refugee and/or immigrant. Having lost a home and for many, even loved ones during their quest for freedom and survival, the "American Dream" has its own share of difficulties. Parents faced with the difficult tasks of finding job(s) to make ends meet, while worring about their family's safety. Children face the battles of peer pressures, being teased, among other issues at school. And even racism that continue to exist. Without the kind hearts of humanitarians who care for strangers from all walks of life, this world would not be a good place for anyone.
I'm thankful that there exist a day dedicated to the plight of refugees all over the world. May our struggles and ability to persevere over unimaginable obstacles be the strength for those who need strength. May humanity learn from history's mistakes and not repeat for humanity's of tomorrow. May their be peace and justice in this world.
